STELLA NAIR So Pumacahua, who is originally from Chinchero, is the one who leads the capture of Túpac Amaru II. In the end, he regrets it, and he goes against the Spanish and he also dies. You would think that the people of Chinchero in particular would maybe have some ambiguity. On the church, there’s a picture showing a lion and a dragon fighting—Pumacahua, a name referencing the puma, and then Tupac is the serpent. So that battle is memorialized. But they all side with Túpac Amaru II and his legacy. And it really symbolizes indigenous persistence.
